Experienced Web Developer

Suckerpunch is looking for an experienced Web Developer to join our growing team of professionals. In this role you will collaborate with our designers to turn project goals and scope into full-fidelity interactive design mocks, then turn those into beautiful, full-functioning WordPress websites. You must be organized, able to balance multiple projects and complete them within scope and budget.

Responsibilities

  • Translate in-house website designs into working WordPress themes
  • Debug websites and troubleshoot end user issues
  • Develop and extend WordPress plugins based on the needs of our clients
  • Aid and coach designers in optimizing designs for digital formats
  • Train junior developers, as well as help non-developers with content updates
  • Communicate and perform training with clients
  • Enable our clients to manage their website content without requiring HTML knowledge
  • Build HTML email templates
  • Support website management and perform content updates
  • Document code and projects for other team members
  • Understand the purpose of technology to meet strategic communication goals
  • Collaborate on new tools, technologies, and techniques

Skills, expertise, and qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience building websites using many of the WordPress APIs
  • Possess a strong knowledge of the fundamentals of the web: HTML and CSS, as well as web standards, semantic markup, schema.org, accessibility, and REST
  • Intermediate skill level in PHP and JavaScript, with a solid understanding of MySQL
  • Familiar with modern web development using Git, NPM, Docker, ES6, SCSS, etc.
  • Experience optimizing websites for performance
  • Solid understanding of LAMP-based web hosting principals
  • Skilled in using the web inspector and JavaScript debugging tools
  • Comfortable working in a Linux command line
  • Understand the importance of reliable, long-term technologies over new and shiny
  • Must be confident learning on the go and without direction
  • Confident in the Creative Cloud suite (Mainly Photoshop and Illustrator)
  • A keen attention to detail and user experience; The ability to identify problems and propose effective solutions
  • Always looking for more efficient ways of working
  • Able to effectively communicate complex technical problems into simplified terms
  • Diploma or degree in development, or related work experience

Bonus Points for any of the following:

  • Experience building themes based on the new WordPress Block Editor
  • React, Vue.js or experience in other modern front end frameworks
  • Familiar with SEO techniques (technical and content)
  • Familiarity with Joomla!, Drupal, ExpressionEngine, Craft CMS, or any other content-management system
  • Expertise in UI/UX software such as Figma, Adobe XD, or InVision
